Eco Hero is a mobile app concept designed to make recycling simple, engaging, and efficient. Many users find recycling confusing and time-consuming, which discourages sustainable habits. Eco Hero reduces friction by combining scanning technology, local recycling info, and gamified rewards.
We conducted interviews with students, parents, and KSU’s Director of Sustainability. Findings revealed that local rules vary and are hard to find, contamination anxiety stops people, motivation fades without rewards, and community accountability helps.
Working on Eco Hero taught me the importance of adaptability, collaboration, and user empathy in the design process. The compressed summer timeline forced us to prioritize effectively and still deliver a thoughtful, high-fidelity product. I gained confidence turning messy feedback into actionable improvements and advocating for solutions that balanced user needs with technical feasibility. Good design can make sustainable habits more approachable—small UX decisions can influence real-world behavior.
